We update our guidance on Qatar regularly. As of 20 October 2023, the official guidance remains that Qatar is safe to visit. The local crime rate is relatively low. However, as with all countries, crime can occur at any time. It’s therefore important to exercise the same level of common sense and caution as you would in the UK. Most safe areas are generally well policed and there have been no significant problems reported in areas such as West Bay, The Pearl or Lusail.
As of 2026, safety for citizens and expatriates is considered to be high in Qatar and is unlikely to change significantly between now and 2026. Crime is rare and policing effective. Of course it's always wise to take usual precautions (especially in the case of new developments under construction or in industrial areas) but on the whole the infrastructure is in place to provide a safe environment for people who have chosen to relocate here.
According to the latest advisories, Qatar is considered safe for travel:
Here are the places in Qatar that are considered safe for tourists and residents:
Safety for expats and tourists in Qatar has generally remained stable, with only a low level of disruption to daily life. The main tourist areas, hotels and shopping malls are well protected and visitors have generally had a safe and secure holiday in a culturally positive environment. Doha enjoys a high standard of living. As always, we always recommend that holiday makers stay up to date with local developments and official travel advice.
International flights are returning to normal after being disrupted for several days by severe weather. Qatar Airways and other carriers have resumed all of their daily flights to and from Qatar. The country’s buses and metro system is also fully operational, providing citizens and residents with a convenient mode of transportation.
We advise you to check that any insurance you have includes political unrest and medical cover. Overall, the security situation in Qatar is currently stable. Please contact your insurance company for further information.
In the event of an emergency, the following contacts are crucial:
Local emergency: 999, Indian Embassy: +974 4425 5777, MEA helpline: +91-11-23012113
About 670,000 Indians live in Qatar, making up about 7% of the population, according to India’s Ministry of External Affairs. In general, the community here's stable and secure, Indian ministry officials say. It’s recommended that all Indians here register with their embassy to receive important notifications regarding various events and to help immediate assistance in case of an emergency. The embassy has a 24/7 helpdesk that can assist with urgent requirements.
If you're currently in Qatar, we recommend that you remain vigilant and pay close attention to any local developments as well as updates issued by our office and other reliable sources. In the event of an emergency, follow all instructions given by the authorities and contact your embassy or consulate immediately.it may also be prudent to have in place some contingency arrangements such as knowing the most direct route to safe areas in the event of an evacuation.
Although conditions are currently unstable in Qatar, they aren't yet sufficient for us to advise against travel to the country at this time. In the event that the situation changes and we advise against travel to Qatar, it may be possible to return early to the UK. We and your tour operator will keep you updated about developments and advise on action you can take in the event of a change in travel advice. You should remain in contact with us and/or your tour operator and also with your embassy in case of any emergency, and we strongly encourage you to seek their advice before arranging or embarking on any travel to or within Qatar.
