Bogota is becoming increasingly a crime and health risk city, so I consider it moderately dangerous for travelers and expats.

Alarming Increase in Crime Rate

Vietnam is widely regarded as a holiday and expat paradise, but in recent years crime levels are on the rise, with murder and theft statistics up 15% across Vietnam’s major cities. Regions such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have become hotspots and are now posing safety issues, particularly for tourists who are often being targeted and robbed or mugged on the streets.

Crimes committed using violence and abnormal methods have surged recently, according to the Vietnam Ministry of Public Security. This is especially concerning as authorities in the affected provinces seem to be doing little to try to curb the rise in criminal violence. Visitors need to be warned about the new trend in crimes. The increase in violent crimes isn't a static number, but is a real issue that visitors to the region will need to be aware of.

Tourist Scams on the Rise

Scams targeting tourists have risen by 20% in recent statistics. Scams in cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are a widespread and popular way for scammer's to take advantage of tourists. These have become more and more elaborate to deceive even the most travelled and cautious tourist.

Beware of scams by tourists of scams with vendors and service providers. It's always best to deal with official or licensed outfits, because after reading of so many tourist scams in Vietnam, the country that lured you in is at risk of turning you into a casualty.

Beware of street vendors who promote cheap tours or products and don't rely on unverified transportation or tour operators.

Environmental Hazards Exceeding Safe Limits

It appears that the air quality in Vietnam is getting worse. It was recently revealed that the air quality in the capital city Hanoi and Vietnam’s largest city Ho Chi Minh City have exceeded the recommended limit by 30% set by the World Health Organisation (WHO). An increase in industrial activities and rapid urbanisation in these two cities have been the main causes of air pollution in these areas. Sufferers will be at greater risk of suffering respiratory-related illnesses.

Air quality matters should be closely watched in all the destinations we visit, and precautions such as wearing masks and staying in when air pollution is likely to peak should be taken. The health impacts of air pollution are a very serious matter and can negatively impact our travel experience and perhaps even affect the region’s tourism industry.

Economic Concerns and Increased Costs

According to Global News Network Vietnam has been experiencing some turbulence in its economy with inflation rising to 7.5 per cent. Not only is this affecting the cost of living, but also the cost of travelling too – with the average daily expenditure for tourists coming in at around 2,000,000 VND (£45, €80, $85, ₹7,000). Many tourists already feel as though their budget is being stretched to the limit, and any rises are likely to be felt intensely.

Prices in Vietnam are surging with accommodation costs up 10% from 2025. Average night time for a hotel now sits around 1,500,000 VND (€60 $65) per night. These soaring price hikes are a symptom of the broader economic pressures Vietnam is under. Inflation continues to soar for basic necessities and Vietnam is still proving to be an expensive destination.

Health & Safety Risks

The Vietnamese authorities have informed us that there has been an increase in health risks. There has been a significant increase in the number of dengue fever cases in Vietnam compared with 2005. These are an increasing problem for travellers, particularly as there's no vaccine available. In addition to taking preventative measures with clothing and insect repellents the Vietnamese health authorities have now issued a warning regarding dengue fever to visitors.

Road traffic accidents are still a real hazard and there has been a 12% increase in such accidents involving foreign nationals. The chaos of the roads in cities like Cairo and Amman are a daily source of frustration and danger. Care should be taken when travelling on roads and using local transport.

Insurance Be sure to get a good travel insurance policy that will cover health and accident problems. The state of the local health services can vary from bad to appalling.

Government Warnings and Travel Advisories

Over the weekend, the Vietnamese government has issued several travel warnings for the regions more frequently impacted by natural disasters like heavy flooding and landslides during the monsoon season. It’s highly advisable for all travelers to heed to the warnings as they relate to countries or regions where the risk of disasters is considered to be very high. You can find the updated government travel warnings on the Vietnam Government Portal.

The recent political row between Vietnam and the Philippines has led to higher security alert levels in the border regions of both countries. As a precaution, travelers are advised to stay up to date with developments and are urged to exercise caution in areas with an elevated security alert, particularly in the border regions of Vietnam, Philippines and surrounding areas. it's essential to stay up to date with official government travel advisories.
